How Much Sand Do I Need?

Master the mathematical formulas, bulk density conversions, and compaction allowances for any construction or landscaping project.

Whether you are leveling ground for an above-ground pool, preparing a paver patio base, or filling a sandbox, accurate sand calculations prevent costly mid-job delivery delays and excessive leftover material.

Follow this 4-step engineering formula to calculate the exact cubic yards, tons, and bags required.

Step 1

Measure Your Area Dimensions in Feet

Measure the length and width of your project in feet. If you have measurements in inches, convert them to decimal feet by dividing by 12 (e.g., 10 feet 6 inches = 10.5 feet).

Rectangular AreaArea (sq ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)
Circular / Round AreaArea (sq ft) = 3.14159 × Radius² (ft)
Step 2

Determine Depth & Calculate Cubic Volume

Depth is typically specified in inches. Convert inches to feet by dividing by 12, then multiply by your surface area to find cubic feet. Divide by 27 to find cubic yards.

The Golden Sand Formula:
Cubic Yards = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth in) ÷ 324
Where 324 represents 27 cu ft/yd³ × 12 in/ft.
Step 3

Apply the Compaction & Waste Allowance (+10%)

Sand delivered from a quarry is loose and aerated. When installed and watered down or tamped with a plate compactor, particle voids close and the sand settles by 5% to 10%. Irregular ground excavations consume another 3% to 5%.

Recommendation: Always multiply your net volume by 1.10 (10% extra) to ensure you do not run short.

Step 4

Convert to Weight (US Tons) or 50 lb Bags

Quarries sell bulk sand by the ton (2,000 lbs), whereas hardware stores sell pre-packaged 50 lb or 60 lb plastic bags.

For Bulk Orders (Tons):

Multiply Cubic Yards × 1.35
e.g. 4 cu yds × 1.35 = 5.4 Tons

For Bagged Sand (50 lb):

Multiply Cubic Yards × 54
e.g. 1 cu yd = 54 bags (50 lb)
